As parents, we often wonder how to teach our children something as big and life-changing as following Jesus. It can feel overwhelming—but the beautiful truth is this: following Jesus doesn’t begin with big, complicated actions. It begins with small, everyday choices.
Jesus Himself kept it simple when He called His disciples:
“Come, follow me,” — Matthew 4:19
That same invitation is extended to our children. And as parents, we have the privilege of guiding them, step by step, in what that looks like.

🌿 Faith Starts in the Little Moments
Children don’t need to understand deep theology to begin following Jesus. They learn through daily life—through what they see, hear, and practice.
Following Jesus for a child might look like:
Sharing a toy instead of keeping it all to themselves
Telling the truth, even when it’s hard
Saying “I’m sorry” and choosing kindness
Listening and obeying with a willing heart
These are not small things in God’s eyes. These are the seeds of discipleship.
🌈 Your Role as a Guide
Scripture reminds us:
“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” — Proverbs 22:6
Training doesn’t mean perfection—it means consistency. It means gently guiding, correcting with love, and modeling what it looks like to follow Jesus yourself.
Children are always watching. When they see you:
Pray in hard moments
Choose patience instead of frustration
Show love even when it’s difficult
They begin to understand that following Jesus is a way of life, not just something we talk about.
💛 Teaching Surrender in Simple Ways
Jesus teaches us:
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” — Luke 9:23
For adults, that can sound heavy—but for children, we can translate this into simple, relatable choices.
You might say:
“Following Jesus means we choose what is right, even when we really want something else.”
“It means we listen to Jesus in our hearts instead of our sneaky thoughts.”
This helps children begin to recognize the difference between their own desires and God’s way.
🌟 Making Faith Part of Everyday Life
You don’t need a perfect plan—just intentional moments.
Try weaving faith into your daily routine:
Morning: “Let’s ask Jesus to help us make good choices today.”
During play: “What would Jesus want us to do right now?”
After mistakes: “Let’s talk to Jesus and ask for help.”
At bedtime: Reflect on moments where they followed Jesus
These small conversations build a strong spiritual foundation over time.
🌼 Encouragement for the Journey
Parenting is not about getting it right every time—it’s about pointing your child back to Jesus again and again.
Some days will feel messy. Some lessons will need repeating. That’s okay.
What matters most is that your child is learning:
Jesus is always with them
They can listen to Him
Following Him is good, safe, and full of love
💫 A Simple Prayer for You and Your Child
“Jesus, thank You for inviting us to follow You. Help us to listen to Your voice in our everyday moments. Give us hearts that choose what is right, even when it’s hard. Teach us to walk in Your love, one small step at a time. Amen.”
🌱 Remember: Big faith doesn’t grow overnight. It grows through little steps, daily moments, and a heart that keeps turning toward Jesus.
