Starting at Home: Teaching Children About Jesus

For many parents, one of the deepest desires of the heart is that their children would know Jesus personally. Yet a common question parents ask is: Where do I even begin?

The beautiful truth is that teaching children about Jesus does not start with a complicated plan or perfect theology. It starts with simple moments of faith lived out at home.

Jesus Himself spoke about home in John 14:2–3, saying:

“My Father’s house has many rooms… I am going there to prepare a place for you.”

This passage reminds us that God’s heart is hospitality—He makes room for us in His home. In the same way, parents can begin teaching their children about Jesus by creating a home where faith is lived, spoken, and experienced daily.

Below are simple ways to start.

1. Let Your Child See Your Relationship With Jesus

Children learn about faith first by watching their parents.

They notice when you:

  • pray

  • read the Bible

  • thank God for blessings

  • ask Jesus for help

Faith becomes real to children when they see that Jesus is part of everyday life, not just something talked about on Sundays.

Simple example:

“Let’s thank Jesus for this food.”

Or:

“Jesus helped mommy today when I felt worried.”

These small moments teach children that Jesus is present in daily life.

2. Talk About Jesus Naturally

Teaching children about Jesus does not need to feel like a formal lesson.

Instead, weave conversations about Jesus into normal moments like:

  • bedtime

  • car rides

  • mealtime

  • playtime

You might say things like:

  • “Jesus loves when we help others.”

  • “Jesus teaches us to be kind.”

  • “God made the beautiful sky we see today.”

Children begin to understand that Jesus is connected to the world around them.

3. Read Bible Stories Together

Bible stories help children see who Jesus is and what God is like.

Start with simple stories that show God's character, such as:

  • Creation

  • Noah’s Ark

  • David and Goliath

  • Queen Esther’s bravery

  • Jesus feeding the crowd

  • Jesus welcoming children

Keep it simple. Ask questions like:

  • “What do you think about that story?”

  • “What did Jesus do that was kind?”

The goal is not perfect understanding—it is building familiarity with God’s story.

4. Teach Through Everyday Kindness

Children understand Jesus best when they see His teachings lived out.

When your child:

  • shares a toy

  • helps someone

  • comforts a friend

You can connect it to Jesus by saying:

“That's showing love like Jesus.”

This helps children learn that following Jesus affects how we treat others.

5. Pray Together

Prayer teaches children that they can talk to God anytime.

Start with very simple prayers like:

“Jesus, thank you for today.”“Thank you for our family.”“Help us be kind.”

Children do not need perfect words. They only need to learn that God listens.

6. Create a Home That Feels Like a Place of Welcome

Just as Jesus described a home prepared for us in John 14:2–3, parents can create homes where children experience love, safety, and belonging.

When children feel loved, forgiven, and valued at home, they begin to understand God’s love for them.

Your home becomes a small reflection of the welcome God offers us.

The Most Important Thing to Remember Is....

You do not need to be a Bible scholar to teach your child about Jesus.

What children need most is to see that:

  • Jesus is real to you

  • faith is part of everyday life

  • love and grace are practiced in your home

Over time, these small moments build a foundation where children begin to understand that Jesus loves them and invites them into His family.

And just like Jesus promised in John 14:2–3, the story of faith is ultimately about coming home to God.

Download the free "I Wonder" Journal Page so that you can create a Journal for your child so that they can draw and record their questions that they may have about Jesus. It's a fun way for you and your family to learn alongside each other as you get to know Jesus better. I wrote a blog post that gives more insight on how you can use the "I Wonder Journal" in your home here.
