Parenting is filled with questions.
Am I doing this right?
Will my child remember what I teach them?
Do the small moments really matter?
For parents who are seeking to raise their children in faith, Proverbs 22:6 often becomes a guiding verse:
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” — Proverbs 22:6
At first glance, this verse can feel like a promise parents must perfectly fulfill. But when we look deeper, we discover that this scripture is actually an invitation into intentional discipleship within the home—something that grows through daily moments, not perfection.
This encouragement is especially important for parents who are trying to follow Jesus’ teachings while guiding young children.

Training Is a Journey, Not a Single Moment
The word “train” in Proverbs 22:6 implies guiding, dedicating, and initiating a child into a way of life.
Training does not happen in one conversation.
It happens in:
bedtime prayers
conversations after mistakes
reading scripture together
modeling kindness and forgiveness
inviting children to ask questions about God, just like the disciples ask Jesus questions
Children learn faith not only through what we teach, but through what we live.
When parents show patience, humility, and love, children begin to see what the teachings of Jesus look like in everyday life.
Jesus: The Model for Teaching Children
Jesus welcomes children and values their presence.
He said:
“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” — Matthew 19:14
Jesus showed us something powerful about children: they learn through relationship.
He teaches through stories, everyday experiences, questions, and gentle guidance.
These same approaches can shape how we disciple our children at home.
Teaching children about Jesus does not require theological expertise.
It begins with simple steps like:
talking about God's love
praying together during daily routines
reading the Bible
discussing kindness, forgiveness, and gratitude
When parents introduce these rhythms, they are quietly training their children in the way they should go.
When Parenting Feels Difficult
Every parent experiences moments when discipling children feels challenging.
Children test boundaries.
We and them struggle with patience.
We and them make mistakes while learning how to love others well.
These moments are not failures.
They are opportunities for teaching.
Jesus often uses our mistakes and questions as moments for deeper understanding.
Parents can do the same by guiding children through situations with grace, truth, and patience.
For example:
When a child struggles with sharing, parents can talk about loving others.
When a child feels angry, parents can teach about forgiveness.
When a child feels afraid, parents can remind them of God's presence.
These moments build a foundation that helps children understand the heart behind Jesus' teachings.
The Seeds You Plant Today
Sometimes parents wonder if their efforts matter—especially when children seem distracted or uninterested.
But Proverbs 22:6 reminds us that training plants seeds.
Seeds take time to grow.
A child who hears about God's love during bedtime prayers may remember those words years later.
A lesson about kindness during playtime may shape how they treat others in the future.
Parents are not responsible for controlling every outcome.
Instead, they are called to faithfully plant seeds of truth, love, and guidance.

Encouragement for Parents
Raising children in faith is not about having all the answers.
It is about walking alongside your children and pointing them to Jesus in everyday life.
