Why Taking Turns Matters More Than You Think

In the world of early learning, big milestones like learning letters or counting often take the spotlight. But some of the most powerful lessons are tucked inside everyday moments — like taking turns.

Turn-taking might seem like a simple skill, but for young children, it’s a big deal. It requires waiting, watching, listening, and trusting that their voice matters too. Whether it’s passing a toy, answering a question, or choosing a song, the concept of "my turn, your turn" builds the foundation for love, patience, and healthy relationships.

What Turn-Taking Teaches:

  • Self-Regulation – Waiting for a turn gives little ones practice managing their impulses.

  • Social Awareness – Children begin to notice others’ needs, feelings, and reactions.

  • Communication – They learn to listen and respond, not just speak.

  • Confidence – Knowing their turn will come helps build security and trust.

Learning Through Play

Young children learn best through playful experiences, not lectures. That’s why puppets, games, and simple role-play scenarios are such effective tools. Puppets can model waiting, narrate feelings, and even make mistakes that spark conversation. It's safe, silly, and incredibly effective.

To help make this concept playful and practical, I’ve created a social emotional lesson guide with activities that will help you to bring to life a fundamental concept that sharing is loving others like we love ourselves in action, one of the two laws that Jesus commanded us to do. The lesson also includes a free puppet script you can use at home, in a classroom, or even during circle time. It’s called “My Turn, Your Turn!” and it's a ready-to-use tool for practicing this important skill in a fun, low-pressure way.

Whether you're a parent, caregiver, or educator, small, consistent lessons in turn-taking can make a big difference — not just in how children play, but in how they connect, cooperate, and grow.

Here is a video of Moxie learning how to take a turn in action with the puppet script.
